SAT Preparation

For many high schoolers, the SAT is right around the corner, and we have received a number of requests from students and families to offer a program that provides support and preparation for the SAT. The SAT is a test that requires focus, time management, and endurance, all areas that virtual learning, by default, does not help develop. That’s why our SAT prep sessions, scheduled to begin this summer, will be 2 hours long, for 4 days a week. These groups will consist of about 6-8 students at a time, and our tutors will help students with math and verbal prep as well as test taking strategies.

Test Taking Strategies

Before beginning any work on SAT content or test taking strategies, we have our students take a pre-test. The pre-test is a practice version of the SAT that gives our tutors and students a baseline, so they can track their progress at the end of the prep sessions. After the pre-test, our tutors work with students on triaging questions, test content, whether or not guessing benefits them, and more. We strongly believe that the more familiar a student becomes with a test’s format and content, the better they will perform. At the end of the student’s sessions, they will take a post-test (another practice SAT) to see how they have grown throughout their time at Wright Academics.

Verbal Preparation

The bulk of the verbal prep portion of these sessions will focus on words in context and command of evidence. For words in context, the SAT offers a full essay or speech and asks the student to examine and define a single word within the context of the larger body of work. Command of evidence is similar, but for these questions, the test asks students to analyze a quote and determine how the quote should be interpreted considering the tone, voice, and meaning of the full piece.

Math Preparation

The SAT incorporates a lot of word problems with excessive information, forcing the student to determine which information is relevant to the problem and which information to disregard. This is where test taking strategies and familiarity with the test come into play. The more exposure a student has to the types of questions presented on the test, the less they will feel like a deer in the headlights when they take the SAT.

Group Work

As with any group program we offer, we place a large emphasis on individual attention with students. That’s often why we cap the groups at 6-8 people. Outside of the study sessions, we encourage students to practice on their own. This does two things: gets students more familiar with the test as a whole and illuminates any areas where they are getting stuck. This allows the student to come to their next session with questions in hand, which the tutor is able to work through with them in real time. In addition to giving students “homework” outside of their sessions, we encourage them to take advantage of online resources in their free time for extra practice, like Khan Academy.

1-on-1 Sessions

In addition to group work, we also offer 1-on-1 SAT prep for students. Often students with learning differences like dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia benefit most from 1-on-1 tutoring as it is much more specific to the learning style of the individual. Students with anxiety and ADHD often benefit from the individualized 1-on-1 environment as well. If students receive accommodations, we give them the same accommodations they will receive on the test in our preparation, like extended time. 1-on-1 sessions can be purchased on their own or in combination with group tutoring sessions.

We are so excited to be able to offer these sessions to our high schoolers! As always, our number one goal is to meet the needs of our students, whatever they may be. If your student is interested in our SAT prep sessions, group or individual, please send me an email at ev@wrightacademics.com.
