Back to School Tips:

  1. Create a study space you love. Placing a desk or table in a clean, well lit, clutter-free area can make your study space so inviting.
  1. Track more than just assignments and tests in your planner. Use your planner to track extracurricular activities as well. Basketball games, lacrosse practice, music assemblies, and study groups, etc. Your planner is a great place to keep track of all activities.
  1. Start small with the BIG assignments. If you complete a small chunk of a long-term project each day it keeps you motivated and gives you the time you need to make any changes and additions.
  1. It takes more than just cool school supplies to stay organized. New binders, index cards, and colorful tabs are all so inviting and motivating, but real organization occurs when you create systems to help you stay organized.
  1. Get into a routine. What time will you devote to school and homework each day?
  1. Make a schedule, and stick with it.
  1. Learn to create a zone that is free of distractions. Maybe it’s turning off your phone, laptop, and iPad notifications while doing homework. Maybe turning off the phone completely (temporarily) is the way to go.
  1. Manage your expectations and be realistic about how long things actually take to complete.
  1. Use your class time wisely. Go see your teacher at the end of class when you do not understand the content. Advocate for yourself. Do not delay. It is better to deal with this right away rather than wait until you’re really behind. Review your notes each night to help “get it”.
  1. Study a little bit each day.
  1. Do not let a bad grade bring you down. Learn from it. Get the help you need. Go see the teacher, sign up for a tutor when you need a little extra help with content and organization.
  1. Make a friend or friends in each class. Find people who can help you be accountable for your work. Help them the same.

Friends make for great study partners.

And there you have it! A backpack full of valuable tips for your upcoming school year. Remember, it’s not just about getting through your syllabus – it’s about embracing the whole experience. So, as you set up your cozy study nook, fill your planner with more than just deadlines, and master the art of time management (Oh, we can help with that too!), don’t forget to keep that positive spirit alive.
